Here We Go Already

There's something magical about the NBA finals. No, it's not the ora of greats like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird or Magic Johnson. It's not the mystique of witnessing the best athletes on the hardwood duking it out for the championship. It's not even the fact that tickets are like a gazzilion dollars.

The NBA finals means only one thing - Football season is only a few days away!

"But wait," you proclaim. "Football season doesn't start for two more months."

I beg to differ, drastically. You see football season starts the moment the final NBA whistle is blown. I know, we haven't even gotten to the finals yet. But there coming, and one must display patience.

So now, after a rather unbearably-long introduction, I give you the first truly impressive YouTube video for Penn State Football 2007. I was at Penn State (Blue Band all four years) for the unveiling of the first stadium video, the legendary "Gladiator" from 2003. So that one will always stay closest to my heart, but each year new ones come out from amateurs and the professionals in the Penn State football office. They always get the blood pumping and the adrenaline surging. Here you go:

Thinning Ranks

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Penn State is looking at handing out maybe 15 scholarships in the upcoming recruiting class. After three straight years of top 25 freshmen hauls, overcrowding has become a real problem on the depth chart. Top 25 linebackers (in their respective recruiting classes) Tyrell Sales, Dontey Brown and Jerome Hayes are just now cracking the 1st team defense and surprisingly enough, none of them or really anyone else in the junior and senior classes has considered transferring or leaving early.

Just look at rising senior quarterback Anthony Morelli, ranked as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback coming out of high school. He sat two long years on the bench behind the likes of Zach Mills and Michael Robinson, while seeing only extreme mop up duty here and there. Morelli de-committed from Pitt just before signing day to join the Nittany Lions, with the hopes that he would fill in nicely for the graduating Mills. 2004, nothing. 2005, nothing. 2006, OK finally the starting job, but hardly the type of breakout season he and everyone else was hoping for. Granted, he performed admirably with no real experience. Yet fans can't help but dream about what could have been had he been given more than a few dozen pass attempts over his first two seasons.

This season, though, with Morelli, tailback Austin Scott, All-America linebacker Dan Connor and others leaving for the NFL or graduating, Penn State came around to the idea of redshirting a future starter in rising redshirt freshman Pat Devlin. Devlin was yet another recruiting steal, this time from Miami (FL). And with plenty of backups to chose from, the Lions should be set for a few years under center.

Similar to the NFL Draft, college recruiting follows a fairly reliable pattern. That is, good NFL teams draft for need; bad teams draft for the best talent available. It is not all that different from college. Take Illinois for instance. When they were pathetic, they put everything into getting players like Rashard Mendenhall and Juice Williams. Now that the team talent is improving, head coach Ron Zook can look at less "impact" positions to build up.

Penn State is showing a great deal of interest, understandably, on Tyrell Pryor, the No. 1 overall prospect and top-rated dual-threat quarterback. Why? It has been years since the offensive line dominated opponents, and for some reason, great recruits haven't panned out in Happy Valley. Levi Brown taken at No. 5 overall in this year's NFL draft is the highest since Jeff Hartings and Andre Johnson were taken 23 and 30 overall respectively.

Bottom line today is this: Penn State needs to be very, very careful how it uses its scholarships going into 2008. Sign for need, not talent. There is not nearly enough to miss out on filling slots for the future. Otherwise, get ready for another stretch similar to the five years of hell, 2000-2004.

Beaver Brawl

Let's just get this out of the way. By now, the whole nation knows the Penn State football team will be picking up plenty of sacks this upcoming season - sacks of trash, that is. And it's useless to beat a dead horse, but what better time to start a blog than with the customary "Wow! You fellas really messed up a potential championship season."

After weathering the storm of four senior starters graduating following the 2005 championship season, things were looking up, up, and away for the 2007 defensive backfield. Justin King, Tony Davis, AJ Wallace and [now, resident moron] Anthony Scirrotto were slated to return and continue to lock down play-making receivers and torment the best passing games in college football.

Then, in a flash of brilliance, Scirrotto decided to teach those kids a lesson, rather than just tell them off and move on to the next party. Yes, not only did he feel it was necessary to pursue the issue - the scum-bag victims said "eww" when Scirrotto's girlfriend spit on the ground on E. College Ave. - and provoke a confrontation, he proceeded to call in the cavalry, and the infantry, artillery, patriot missiles, nuclear warheads, and... well, you get the picture. Some estimates have as many as 30-40 Nittany Lions showing upon Scirrotto's summoning, with plans to bash in the heads of those whining, little Meridian-party-goers.

Alright, so not all of them were there to fight. Actually, I would be many were there to extinguish the powder keg, but what's done is done and the Penn State football nation can only hope the rising-junior safety, who led the Big Ten in interceptions with six, is not kicked off the team entirely. Scirrotto and Chris Baker both face a trial, with charges dropped against King and others.

I can only imagine what those kids are going through right now. No, not the football players. Believe it or not, the accusers. They better not expect to get a warm reception at any class or party, never mind once football season rolls around in two months. I know I wouldn't want to be them.
