Reviews: OSU-Minn, MSU-IU, Ole Miss Upsets No. 4 Florida

Games I watched from 12-3:30 p.m.:
Ohio State-Minnesota (BTN)
Indiana-Michigan St (ESPN)

Bonus Game: Florida-Mississippi (ESPN GamePlan)

No. 14 Ohio State 34, Minnesota 21
This was a better game for Minnesota that the score indicates. Adam Weber is a true gamer, and proved it today. Ohio State was just too talented, especially with Terrelle Pryor taking snaps. I thought for a few plays I was watching NCAA 09. Now, I wonder what would have happened if Pryor went to Michigan... just a thought. But Ohio State has to concentrate more on offense, rather than just rely on the big play. And speaking of big plays, was Weber's pitch to WR Ralph Spry one of the gutsiest single plays so far today? I think so. Overall, it was Ohio State's depth and talent that wore down the young Gophers, but I don't feel much better about the Buckeyes right now.

Michigan St 42, Indiana 29
The Hoosiers could have pulled this one out had Kellen Lewis not gone down for a quarter with a foot injury. Javon Ringer wasn't running crazy like many predicted, which should throw up some red flags for MSU. The schedule won't allow Ringer to get 35-40+ carries every game. Brian Hoyer has to start playing with more consistency. But the MSU offense wasn't the only side of the ball playing sloppy today. The defense gave up too many home-runs to IU's spread attack. MSU got lucky today, and a great example of that is my play of the game. In the third quarter, down 34-29, Kellen Lewis dropped back into his own end zone, and tossed a 97-yard touchdown. But it was called back for holding in the end zone, giving MSU a safety and a nine-point swing. Tide turned.

Bonus Game:
Ole Miss 31, No. 4 Florida 30
SEC fans will try to spin this as "every team is great in the SEC," but that doesn't fly. Florida shouldn't have lost to a Rebels team that lost--albeit on the last play--to Wake Forest, then to Vanderbilt. Kirk Herbstreit said during ESPN Game Day that Florida is the best team in the SEC. If this is the best team, then there's a big problem for the conference. Ole Miss just played tougher, and smarter, today in the Swamp.

*Later today: The 3:30-7 p.m. games.

Big Ten Pick'em 2008: Week 4

This is a big week for the Big Ten. After flopping against USC and Oregon, not many in the media will pay attention to this week's slate. I'm going out on a limb, and pick the Big Ten to sweep all opponents. I think the conference is better than everyone portrays it.

Big Ten Bloggers Roundtable :: The Rebound

Lake the Posts asks the questions in week’s Big Ten Bloggers Round Table.

1)The national media is using the Big Ten Conference as a punching bag in 2008 ranking us somewhere between the Big East and the MAC. Based on Ohio State's no-show, Purdue's "APPLE!!!" and Michigan's debacle, it is redemption week in Big Ten Country. However, several teams have very respectable, yet no-name teams (ie. Troy, Central Michigan, Ball State). Tell us how the Big Ten will respond this week in the final week before conference play.

ZN: This will be the most underrated week of the season. (See schedule, right) Practically every Big Ten opponent has gotten a headline this year. Ball State has remained quiet, but they did get some preseason hype in the MAC. Easiest Game this week: Temple @ PSU; Toughest Game this week: CMU @ Purdue; Big Ten MUST WIN: Iowa @ Pitt. Best case scenario: 8-0; Worst case: 2-6. I think the Big Ten comes out to play this week before conference openers.

2)The conference standings look like someone took the 2007 results and flipped it upside down.  Which of the undefeated teams are contenders and which are pretenders (another way of saying which teams have put lipstick on a pig)? Recalibrate your preseason rankings and tell us who the conference favorites are now.
ZN: Contenders: Penn State, Wisconsin; Pretenders: Indiana, Minnesota, Northwester; Could go either way: Iowa. The jury is still out on the Hawkeyes, but that’s probably due to their lack of media coverage. In two weeks or so I’ll let you know on that one. But I must say, EVERYONE called me crazy for picking Michigan No. 10 for 2008 (See my preseason predicted finish, right). While the Wolverines aren’t going to fall that far (I think ND was a fluke, even though I called that upset, thank you very much), currently they are DEAD LAST in the Big Ten. But if I had to change it, I would say Wisconsin would bump up to No. 2, and Ohio State down to No. 3. Purdue would move a bit lower, maybe to No. 7. However, overall I think I hit the nail on the head this preseason.

3)Javon Ringer has emerged as the early season best-bet Heisman hopeful from the Big Ten.  Real deal or non-conference smoke screen?  Does anyone from the Big Ten have a prayer for the Heisman, or is it too late?
ZN: I think Ringer is the best running back only when getting his 30-35 carries per game. If you asked me, right now, to name the top-three Big Ten rushers: No. 1 Evan Royster - Sorry folks, you whether you like it or not, Royster leads the conference’s starting RBs with a ridiculous 8.1 ypc, and only a handful of his 38 carries were after halftime. PJ Hill has 70 carries so far, and Ringer has 104. If Royster had those carries, he would have 567 and 842 yards, respectively. I’m not knocking Ringer or Hill, as they are two of the premier backs in the entire nation. But I think Royster hasn’t gotten due credit, just because Joe Paterno takes him out right after halftime. Check it out for yourself:
To address the Heisman race, I don’t think a running back will win it at all this season. Quarterbacks are the sexy pick, and with guys like Chase Daniel, Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford, guys like Ringer, Royster and Hill have no shot. They could place, but not win.
4)After three weeks it is time to give your team a new slogan.  What is it and why is it what it is?
ZN: “I should have been playing football, but I got high...” - If you don't know what that means, you aren't a college football fan.

Or for a more serious one...

“So what?” - So what? Everyone called us dead after Sean Lee went down, Chris Bell, Phil Taylor, Chris Baker were kicked off the team, and Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma got a few games to think about what they've done. Not to mention that confidence in the new offense was very low, and that we were just benefiting from a weak non-conference slate. So what?
5)By now, you've likely adopted a favorite non Big Ten team to watch.  Flex your football worldliness by convincing your fellow Big Ten kool-aid drinkers to watch your "other" team.
ZN: I really like Missouri. But I put so much effort into the first four questions, I don’t really feel like giving it my all for this one. Chase Daniel is the man, and should he keep it up, will win the Heisman. The rest of the offense is incredible, and the defense is vastly underrated. Plus, if you like big games, just wait until the Big XII Championship game, when Mizzou will most likely face off with Oklahoma. They could be two top-five teams at that point. Whoa.
So that’s it for this week’s Big Ten Bloggers Round Table. Go State.

Big Ten Pick'em 2008: Week 1

This year's Big Ten Bloggers weekly pick'em is brought to you by Gopher Nation. Most of the games are against cupcakes, but there are some really critical games for the Big Ten's supposed tarnished image around the nation. Michigan State traveling to California, Michigan hosting Utah and Missouri squaring off with Illinois could each help tip the balance of power back to the Big Ten. I didn't go with any real upsets, but there are a few picks that go against conventional wisdom... or do they? Find out now.

(FYI: Each team name links to its respective official football site. I also used the USA Today Coaches Poll for the team rankings. Any time you see a ranking before a team name at ZN, it's the Coaches Poll rank.)

Syracuse vs Northwestern - The ZN pick: N'Western

Western Kentucky vs. Indiana - The ZN pick: Indy

Youngstown St vs. No. 2 Ohio St. - The ZN pick: Ohio St

Coastal Carolina vs No. 22 Penn St - The ZN pick: Penn St

Akron vs. No. 12 Wisconsin - The ZN pick: Wisky

Maine vs. Iowa - The ZN pick: Iowa

Utah vs. No. 24 Michigan - The ZN pick: Mich (yes, I actually picked MICHIGAN)

Northern Illinois vs. Minnesota - The ZN pick: Minny

Mich St vs. California - The ZN pick: Mich St

No. 19 Illinois vs. No. 7 Missouri - The ZN pick: Mizzou

Tonight (it might be very late tonight), I'll pick the rest of the FBS games. And tomorrow, the first game preview for 2008, No. 22 Penn State vs. Coastal Carolina. Damn I'm excited!

2008 Herbies: Where's the love?

I'm still convinced Kirk Herbstreit is a closet Penn State fan. But this time around, his eighth annual Herbie Awards had a bit less love for the Lions. There was the customary pitch for PSU as the best student section, as Herbie has been infatuated with the Whiteout since Ohio State 2005. We're always glad to have that feather in our cap.

"1. Penn State -- If you haven't been to Happy Valley in the fall, you're missing out on one of the great happenings in all of sports. Quite simply the loudest, most supportive student section in college football."
Coming in second...Florida (muahahahaha!)

In another PSU plug, Herbie named Tom Bradley and his defense No. 5 overall, alongside Pete Carroll (No. 1), Willie Martinez (No. 2), Will Muschamp (No. 3) and Jim Heacock (No. 4). Not bad company.

And before I go negative, I'll mention that PSU was listed next to MSU for sleepers in the Big Ten this year. (It was a "Penn State/Michigan St" sort of thing) So that's positive. But now for my gripe.

Maurice Evans wasn't even listed as one of the top SEVEN defensive ends in college football. Mr. Herbstreit, we as PSU fans love you. You've supported us in our dark times, and cheered us in the light. But now you disappoint us, as well as many of your colleagues who voted Evans All-America last year. But I guess we shouldn't be all that shocked, since you also chose to leave off Greg Middleton of Indiana. He, after all, only led the nation in sacks last season!

We still love you, Herbie, and get GameDay back to PSU!

First Look: Michigan State Spartans

There’s a team up north that is ready to blow up. No, it’s not Wisconsin. Nor is it Michigan. Why, it’s lowly old Michigan State. I’m not sure why, but I’ve hopped on the MSU bandwagon this season. No wait, I do know why. John L. Smith was the worst thing to happen in East Lansing since, well, there’s not much worse. He had a lot of flash, but was a bit too looney for the Spartans. Then in comes Mark D’Antonio. Former Ohio State defensive coordinator, former Michigan State assistant, fantastic head coach at Cincinnati. But most importantly, Michigan State is finding its identity once again. Punching opponents with the running game, playing disciplined defense, and led by a senior quarterback, this team is on the verge of something big in 2008.

1. Wait, is that Bill Bel... naahhh -- Mark D’Antonio never smiles. That’s a good thing for MSU. I haven’t seen a turnaround in team attitude like this since I started following college football. Under John L., MSU was all over the place with no direction. Quite the opposite under D’Antonio. In his first season, he managed to take a down-trodden program, known for its late-season implosions, and push them hard enough to reach the post season. No coach of the year awards, no fancy offense along the way. MSU did it by strapping it on and playing until the final whistle sounded each week. Sometimes that wasn’t enough (Michigan meltdown?), but other times, it worked like a charm (Penn State’s meltdown vs. MSU?). Almost half of MSU’s losses were within a touchdown. If D’Antonio can keep his players believing that MSU is no longer the little brother in Michigan (even though MSU lost in ’07), those close losses will turn into wins.

2. Ball catchers, anyone? -- All the parts would have been there for a fantastic offense, if WR Devin Thomas didn’t bolt early for the NFL and TE Kellen Davis had another year of eligibility. But, Thomas did, and Davis didn’t. So where does that put MSU going into 2008? Just fine. QB Brian Hoyer threw for 2725 yards and 20 touchdowns in ’07, and has the ability to match those numbers again, even without his primary targets from last season. Of course, this will largely depend on the production MSU gets out of senior RB Javon Ringer (1447 yds/6 tds ’07). Without bruising FB Jehuu Caulcrick (872 yds/21 tds ’07), can Ringer carry the load along? There’s no reason he should have trouble as the main guy. The offensive line is very solid, and should open enough holes. Yet if there’s one side of the ball no one will be paying attention to, even though they should be, is the defense. This is much more experienced that first thought going into ’08. The secondary returns three starters and the linebackers are quick and smart. Those two units were the cause for frustration last year, but should impress this season.

3. Schedule “Bears” down -- I’ve already called for Michigan State to pull the stunner at Cal to open the season. We’ll see how that one goes. But there’s much more to the ’08 slate than meets the eye. Even the two lightweights, Eastern Michigan and Florida Atlantic could give MSU fits. Ok, so maybe EMU won’t be so bad, but you know D’Antonio’s staff is quietly worrying about FAU. There are no breaks for MSU this year. Following Cal, EMU, and FAU, is a visit from Notre Dame. Away at a very dangerous Indiana team, homecoming against Iowa, then at Northwestern, all look like winnable games before the big showdown with Ohio State in East Lansing. Depending how that first stretch goes, MSU could actually be favored going to Ann Arbor the next week. If the Spartans don’t secure a bowl bid by that game, it could get ugly. MSU has to wrap up the season against Wisconsin and Purdue, then travel to a revenge-hungry Penn State crowd, where MSU hasn’t won since PSU joined the Big Ten.

More lines released for PSU/Big Ten

In addition to the three lines released earlier this week--Oregon St. (-2.72), Syracuse (-25.74), and Temple (-15.04)--CollegeFootballPoll.com posted today the remaining lines for Penn State and the Big Ten. It really shouldn't be much of a surprise to fans that CFP is predicting Penn State to finish at 10-2. However, with Wisconsin slated to finish second--Ohio State is first--this would relegate the Lions to the Capital One Bowl. Basically, this entire season could come down to the October matchup with the Badgers, in Madison. Talk about must-see TV.

Here are some more thoughts on the latest lines:

The opener against Coastal Carolina is listed as a 36.25 spread favoring the home team. Following the three predicted wins against OSU, 'Cuse and Temple, Illinois rolls into town. The CFP computers, though, don't like the Illini in that match at all, listing PSU as a 9.62-point favorite under the Beaver Stadium lights. The next week, PSU travels to Purdue, where the Lions are a 4.34-point favorite. Now, that's not a huge spread, but it's more than a field goal, so I'll take it.

The first predicted loss is to Wisconsin in a night game at Camp Randall Stadium. If you think about it, the 4.33-point underdog Lions could pull this one out. You'll see why in a minute. First, the best line of them all. Penn State is an 8.20-point favorite hosting Michigan. Again, I know this is very early, and CFP changes its lines right before each game, but to start out as an 8-plus-point favorite is just outstanding. Lines mean nothing once the game kicks off, but they do count for something.

As I said you'll see, a 4.33-point underdog status at Wisconsin isn't all that bad when you consider Penn State is already listed as a 15.76-point underdog in Columbus. But don't panic yet. I'm not so sure this is a sign the Lions are going to be weak in 2008, as much as Ohio State is going to be really, really, ridiculously good. Losing to the possible No. 1 team will still keep the Lions high in the rankings. It's just a matter of preventing the blowout CFP predicts.

Finally, the last three games should be--according to CFP--a breeze. A trip to Iowa City (-9.87), and home against Indiana (-13.54) and MSU (-8.18) are all showing Penn State victories by comfortable margins.

Some seasons, you can almost see an upset game before it happens. There's always that one trap game just crying for the underdog to come through. This year seems different. Barring any Austin Scott-like trouble, or Jared Odrick-Jerome Hayes-Matt Hahn-like injuries, Penn State should easily reach the 10-win mark. So there it is, folks. If you wanted a don't-miss-this-game-unless-you're-on-fire game, Penn State at Wisconsin will be it.

*CFP has been freakishly accurate since its inception in 1993. From CFP: “The computer has picked the winner in 74.7% of all games played since 1993 (7,828-2,645) while beating the spread in 54.2% of those games (5,221-4,419)... The computer has predicted the national title match-up three times (1993, 1998 and 2005), and at least one contestant every year except 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2006. The team it picked to win the title did so three times (1993, 1998, and 1999), and lost in the title game four times (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005).” Yeah, I’d call that freakish.

And when, exactly, did the Big Ten ask for your advice?

Sean Jackson, a CFN blogger, had a coherent (that was about it) write up on how the Big Ten can be better in 2008. Now, I won’t get into the fact that he’s just one of the many talking about the Big Ten as if it’s the MAC or even the Big East circa 2004. Jackson just made some fundamental mistakes in his assessment of the conference going into 2008, mistakes which should have been, at the very least, addressed by CFN before publishing the article.

“It’s essential that the Big Ten establishes a tone early in the season especially for the younger teams such as Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State. If the younger teams can develop confidence from the beginning of the year, it’ll make the Big Ten much more competitive. If not then history will repeat itself.”

Young? I’m not one to defend those two other teams from Michigan, but to lump Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State in the “young” category is just not correct. Penn State may return as many as 18 starters for 2008, and many more with starting experience. The Lions have an upperclassmen-laden depth chart this fall, and Jackson clearly gives away his failure to do even minimal research by labeling Penn State as a “younger” team in the Big Ten.

Michigan’s defense is shaping up to be one of the better in the conference in 2008, with the entire line returning, an excellent leader in MLB Obi Ezeh, two returning starting corners, and two safeties with starting/meaningful experience.

The Spartans return EIGHT starters on offense, including fantastic back Javon Ringer and signal caller Brian Hoyer. Meanwhile, the defense has six starters coming back, and three more with starting experience. I’ve even called for Michigan State to finish third in the Big Ten this year!
“For the past two years it’s been Ohio State, then Wisconsin and Michigan dueling for second. Illinois emerged last year as a pleasant surprise adding a fourth team to the mix, but from then on it gets ugly pretty quick. Want to prove the media wrong? Want to field teams in the BCS that will compete? Then the core of the conference needs to get better. Teams need to start challenging and keeping up with Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Illinois, in order to make this conference better.”

Has Jackson even watched a Big Ten football game the past two seasons? If I remember correctly, Illinois was 2-10 the year before last, and 2-10 the year before that! He also falls into the pack mentality by failing to recall that the past two seasons, Big Ten BCS teams have played USC twice, Florida, and LSU. I’m not so sure any other conference would do much better against those opponents. The only team that proved it deserved a shot against those two eventual national champions was USC, who’s still (as much as we’d like to ignore it after Vince Young tore them apart in ’05) in the middle of an incredible dynasty of dominance.

Just try to tell me that Oklahoma (which was blown out by Big East “weakling” West Virginia) should have played LSU last year, or Virginia Tech, or even Kansas (which lost to Missou) or Missouri (which lost--twice--to Oklahoma). USC was the only other choice to play in the BCS National Championship Game, and while they probably could have beaten LSU, the Trojans lost to Stanford at home, so the voters never would have gone for placing them ahead of Ohio State. And if you want to take the “voter-bias” point further, West Virginia should have also been given serious consideration, but because of the largely false assumption that the Big East can’t compete, the Mountaineers were left out.*

I don’t think that I’m as upset at Jackson, as it seems. It’s just this snowballing effect since Ohio State lost the 2007 national championship to an LSU team that was supposed to win it from the beginning. Jackson and CFN are just the latest to fall victim to this black hole of sensationalism in college football. There’s nothing wrong with the Big Ten. The SEC isn’t faster than holy hell. USC is still the best football team over the last six years. And don’t worry, next season the media will latch onto something else that will have one half of college football fans whining, and the other half cheering. If everything was so easily explained in this sport, why would any of us even care to watch?

*I won't include Illinois in this part of the conversation, due to the fact that the Rose Bowl goons made the horrible decision to invite the Illini to Pasadena last season. Yeah, the team was January-bowl good, but not hey-let's-play-USC good. The Big Ten should have only had one BCS representative in 2007, period.

Big Ten Bloggers 2008 "Fearless" Conference Predictions

In the last of three 2008 Big Ten Bloggers Preseason Predictions posts, the Big Ten looks to take a turn for the weird. Outside of Ohio State, not many teams are expected to do extremely well in 2008. (I beg to differ) Michigan State, Northwestern and Penn State seem to be gaining steam among us "experts," with Ohio State still leading the pack. Again, I'd like to thank Lake the Posts for organizing this and putting it all together. So here ya go.

Coach of the Year
Pat Fitzgerald, NU (ZN vote: Mark D'Antonio, MSU) I figured if MSU is as good as I think (more on that later), its coach will get the nod here, but the masses have spoken. I was torn though, having changed my answer from Fitz' just before submitting these picks. Sorry, LTP. Speaking of LTP, he said:

"I was shocked considering the same constituents voted the Cats to finish 9th just two weeks ago. As I mentioned the Cats received votes at nearly every ranking though, and clearly my badgering of the bloggers has influenced the vote. Amazing, a coach who is heavily favored to bring his team to the 3rd straight title game comes in second to Fitz. So much for low expectations by my peers!"

Most Likely To Strike Heisman Pose
Beanie Wells, Ohio State. (ZN vote: Same) Duh. But, of course, I'd love to be pleasantly surprised by one of our own. LTP said:
"The only other competitor in the voting was Wells' Ohio State teammate, LB James Laurinaitis, though most conceded the offensive bias of the Heisman would make this unlikely."

Last Year's Illini Will Be This Year's....?
Michigan State (ZN vote: Same) This one was pretty easy. I think D'Antonio is one of the best coaches no one really respects yet. I could see MSU in the Captial One Bowl or better. LTP said:
"General consensus is Ohio State is in a league of their own with Wisconsin and Penn State a tier below and then it is a free-for-all. Sparty had lots of competition as everyone other than the three top tier teams mentioned above got some love with the exception of Indiana."

Upset Game of The Year:
Utah over Michigan (ZN vote: MSU over Cal) I know mine wasn't a "wow" pick, but if MSU can do that, it could be a big year for the Spartans and D'Antonio. I'd have to agree with some of the other guys though, who said that Utah over UM isn't that big of a deal, if you've followed UM's issues lately. LTP said:
"BHGP tried to stir up Happy Valley by taking Coastal Carolina over Penn State (BHGP gets the homerism award for picking Iowa in nearly every category, including Mitch King for Heisman...wise guy!). I chose Central Michigan over Purdue in the combo "its tough to be beat a team 3 times in 2 seasons" cliche along with the classic trap setup between Oregon and Notre Dame games. Wisconsin going down early was a popular choice as, Buckeye blogs led the way. Around the Oval had Akron over Wisconsin while Eleven Warriors had Fresno State upsetting the Badgers."

Name You'll Know In December That No One Knows In June:
Evan Royster, PSU (ZN vote: Bani Gbadyu, PSU) I figured at the very least a few teams knew who Royster was already: Wisconsin, Purdue and Texas A&M. That would cover a good chunk of people in two conferences. But I guess the "that no one knows" was meant figuratively. Sorry, folks, but Gbadyu has a chance to start this fall, and if he plays like he did in 2007 (the small bit we have to go off of), then he'll be up for at least conference HM. LTP said:
"Amazingly only one player received more than four votes as nearly every blogger voted for someone from his own team. Several were able to raise above the fray."

Most Likely to John McLaren (lose it in postgame rant, NOT lose his job):
Rich Rodriguez, Michigan (ZN vote: Same) I just think that the combo of a previously successful coach, a really bad team (relatively), and a media/fan base like UM's, is a formula ready to explode. And Dick-Rod is Mt. St. Helens. LTP said:
"Bonus points to Badger Sports Fan for providing visual aides for several of his answers, especially this one, where he made his case for Mark Dantonio. A Sparty blow-up has become almost a rite of passage thanks to John L. Smith's legacy, but once again Michigan State lost out to its big bro in Ann Arbor as bloggers are warning you to keep Michigan postgame pressers on the TIVO."

Highest Draft Pick In 2009:
Beanie Wells, Ohio State. (ZN vote: Same) There's no other real star in the league right now on the same level as Wells. Granted, he wasn't as well-known as Tebow (SEC love fest strikes again!), but once he broke that long TD run against LSU, his Heisman campaign was officially on. LTP said:
"The voting was much closer, but again it was a two dog race between Laurinaitis and Wells."

Must See Game of The Year That Is Not Michigan-Ohio State:
Ohio State - USC on September 13. (ZN vote: Same) We all kind of knew this one would get the nod, but there are plenty of good games to watch this year. My second would have been a pure homer pick in PSU/Michigan since it could be the first time PSU wins since 1996. We'll see though. LTP said:
"However, Penn State-Wisconsin got quite a few votes and came in 2nd and the Illini got some love, mostly from bloggers whose teams are seeking revenge (most of them!
